Not for Sale: What Every Pastor’s Wife Needs to Know About God’s Timing

There’s a glass case in my living room that holds one of our most treasured possessions: an old German Bible. It’s not valuable because it’s antique, rare, or expensive. In fact, we didn’t buy it at all. That’s the point. It was a gift. And the story behind it still gives me chills.

My husband is a Bible nerd in the best sense of the word. He loves reading them, collecting them, learning from them. So when my dad took a trip to Germany, he had one goal in mind: to bring back a special Bible for his son-in-law. It didn’t take long. Tucked into a quiet bookshop down a cobblestone street, he found it. A beautiful, old Bible—exactly what he had pictured.

But when he asked about the price, the shop owner replied, “It’s not for sale.”

A Bible, A Blessing, and a Strange Gift

My dad pressed a little further, hoping something had gotten lost in translation. He explained the whole backstory: how his son-in-law was a minister, a collector, a lover of German theology. Still, the answer was the same. “Not for sale.”

Disappointed, he lingered by the shelf, heart a little heavy. But then something unexpected happened. The shopkeeper returned, picked up the Bible, and handed it to him.

“I told you,” he said. “It’s not for sale. It’s a gift. Someone before you prepared the way.”

That line has never left me. And even now, years later, I don’t fully understand what it meant. But I do know this: that Bible reminds me over and over that some of the most precious things in life can’t be earned, bought, or bargained for.

When the Door Closes in Your Face

We’ve walked through seasons that looked exactly how we thought they should. The right people, the right opportunities, the right timing. But just as we got to the threshold, the door slammed shut. Maybe you’ve been there too. You pray. You prepare. You plan. And still—closed door.

In those moments, it’s easy to think something went wrong. That you missed the moment. That you should have done more. But what if it’s not a failure? What if the delay, the detour, the “no” is actually part of the gift?

There’s something deeply holy about waiting. About watching the thing you thought you were ready for pass you by, only to have God return later and hand it to you—freely. Because someone else prepared the way. Because He did.

Pastors’ Wives and the Pressure to Perform

If you’re a pastor’s wife, you already know this truth: there is so much that feels like it depends on you. Holding your home together. Showing up for everyone. Smiling when you’re tired. Nodding when you’re overwhelmed. The unspoken rule seems to be: just do more.

But there’s a sacred shift that happens when you realize the thing you’re chasing may not be for sale. You can’t buy peace by saying yes to more. You can’t buy healing by pretending everything’s okay. You can’t buy purpose by producing fruit under pressure.

God’s best gifts are not earned. They’re received.

When Your Strength Runs Out

We all get tempted to take shortcuts when the waiting feels unbearable. We start scouting out other shops, trying to find something close enough to get us by. Something we can afford in our own strength. But friend, don’t settle for a lesser version of what God wants to give you.

If He hasn’t opened the door, wait. If the dream is still on the shelf, trust. If the path is quiet and still, don’t rush to fill it with noise. Just stand still. Let the shopkeeper finish the call. Because the gift He has for you isn’t about what you can do. It’s about what He’s already done.

Someone Before You Prepared the Way

That phrase still brings tears to my eyes. And not just because of the Bible in our case. But because it speaks to how God works. He prepares the way. Long before we arrive at the moment, He has been shaping it.

So when your plans stall, when your hopes feel out of reach, when the answer is “not for sale,” don’t panic. Don’t force it. Don’t settle.

Trust the timing. Trust the roadblock. Trust the delay. It’s not the end of your story—it’s the setup for a gift you couldn’t have earned if you tried.

God’s Weird, Wonderful Ways

Someone told me once, “God works in weird ways in your life—and I like watching.” I laughed, but they were right. And honestly, I think God’s ways feel weird to all of us sometimes. Because they’re not ours. They’re better.

What feels like a delay might be divine protection. What looks like a closed door might be a sacred hand preparing the right one. What seems like rejection might be redirection. And the most beautiful part? You don’t have to earn it.

Just wait. Just trust. Just stay. And let Him hand you the gift, in His way, in His time.
